Danielle and Jose’s Hotel del Coronado Wedding

Danielle and Jose’s Hotel del Coronado wedding unfolded across some of the property’s most recognizable spaces, including Vista Terrace, Coronado Beach, and the historic Crown Room. As their wedding photographer, I documented a celebration that paired The Del’s Victorian architecture and oceanfront setting with one especially personal detail: their pit bull, Buddy, served as ring bearer on his tenth birthday.

Buddy was part of nearly every chapter of the day. He wore a tuxedo, joined Danielle and Jose for portraits, carried their rings down the aisle, and remained close throughout the celebration. Their story was so memorable that the wedding was later featured by PEOPLE Magazine.

Getting Ready at Hotel del Coronado

Danielle got ready in one of the rooms at Shore House at The Del, where the large windows filled the space with natural light. The bright, airy setting was ideal for photographing her details, final touches, and quiet moments with the people closest to her.

Jose prepared in a separate room, but rather than keeping all of his portraits there, we moved to the second floor above the hotel lobby. The rich woodwork and historic architecture created a more distinctive setting for his groom portraits and added a warmer, more refined contrast to Danielle’s light-filled preparation space.

Photographing both parts of the morning in different areas of the property allowed the gallery to show more of Hotel del Coronado’s visual range, from the modern coastal feel of Shore House to the darker wood and historic character of the main hotel.

A First Look with Her Dad at The Del

Before the ceremony, Danielle shared an emotional first look with her dad on the terrace beside Hotel del Coronado’s main entrance.

Surrounded by the hotel’s historic Victorian architecture, the two of them had a quiet moment together before joining the rest of their family and friends. The location also gave us a distinctly Hotel del Coronado backdrop without interrupting the natural emotion of the moment.

A First Look with Jose (and Buddy)

Danielle and Jose also shared a first look with Buddy before the ceremony.

Buddy could see Danielle approaching while Jose remained turned away, making him part of the anticipation from the beginning. Once Jose turned around, the three of them had a few minutes together before the wedding day became busier.

Including Buddy made the moment feel true to their life together. He was not simply brought in for a few photographs. He was treated as an important member of their family throughout the day.

A Vista Terrace Wedding Ceremony

Danielle and Jose exchanged vows on Vista Terrace, surrounded by their closest family members and friends.

The outdoor setting placed their ceremony within the recognizable landscape of Hotel del Coronado while still feeling intimate. The greenery, palms, and surrounding architecture created a setting that felt distinctly coastal and historic.

Buddy served as their ring bearer, walking down the aisle in his tuxedo before settling near the front during the ceremony. His entrance brought plenty of smiles from the guests, but his role also reflected how important he is to Danielle and Jose.

After exchanging vows and rings, the couple shared their first kiss and walked back down the aisle together as newlyweds.

Hotel del Coronado Wedding Portraits

After the ceremony, we created portraits throughout the Hotel del Coronado property.

For these photographs, I intentionally included the hotel’s Victorian façade, signature red roofline, palms, pathways, and architectural details. These wider compositions helped establish a strong sense of place while still keeping Danielle and Jose at the center of the images.

We also created more intimate portraits that focused on their connection and the excitement of having just been married. Balancing wide venue photographs with closer moments gave them a gallery that documented both where the wedding happened and how the day felt.

Coronado Beach Wedding Portraits

Danielle and Jose continued their portraits along Coronado Beach, just steps away from the hotel.

The beach gave us a softer and more relaxed contrast to the structured architecture of The Del. Rather than relying entirely on posed portraits, I encouraged them to walk, move, and interact naturally so the photographs would feel candid and personal.

The combination of the historic hotel and the open shoreline is one of the strongest features of a Hotel del Coronado wedding. Couples can create two completely different portrait experiences without leaving the property.

A Crown Room Wedding Reception

The celebration continued inside the historic Crown Room, one of Hotel del Coronado’s most distinctive reception spaces.

Its woodwork, high ceilings, and crown-shaped chandeliers created an elegant setting for the evening. I photographed the room before guests entered so Danielle and Jose would have images of the completed reception design, including the tables, floral arrangements, place settings, and architectural details.

The couple entered the Crown Room and moved into their first dance, followed by parent dances, dinner, speeches, cake, and an open dance floor.

Buddy remained part of the celebration. He received his own birthday steak and was serenaded by the mariachi band in honor of his tenth birthday. After spending the day greeting guests and participating in the wedding, he eventually fell asleep on a couch inside the reception.

Featured by PEOPLE Magazine

Danielle and Jose’s wedding later received national attention when their story was featured by PEOPLE Magazine.

The feature focused on the meaningful way they included Buddy in their wedding on his tenth birthday. Although the story was unique, what made it especially touching was how naturally he belonged in every part of the celebration.

Planning a Hotel del Coronado Wedding

A Hotel del Coronado wedding offers couples several visually distinct locations within one property. Vista Terrace provides an outdoor ceremony setting, the historic hotel creates an unmistakable backdrop for portraits, Coronado Beach offers a relaxed coastal environment, and the Crown Room brings the celebration into one of the hotel’s most iconic interiors.

From a photography perspective, the variety allows the gallery to feel expansive without requiring the couple and their guests to travel between separate venues.

Danielle and Jose’s wedding was beautiful because of its setting, but it was unforgettable because the day felt completely personal to them. Their celebration combined the history and elegance of The Del with genuine emotion, meaningful relationships, and the presence of a dog who had been part of their story for ten years.

As a San Diego wedding photographer, my goal is to document both sides of a wedding day: the venue and details that bring the vision to life, along with the candid interactions that will matter long after the celebration is over.
